Bird & Bird Supports London Design Festival at the V&A

September 20, 2017

We hosted an interactive product design workshop during the annual London DesignFestival which was led by London partner Ewan Grist, assisted by Roman Brtka (Counsel, Munich), Daisy Dier James (Associate, London) and Patricia Collis (Trade Mark Attorney, London).

Taking place at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the workshop was extremely well attended by a range of international participants representing many different industries, including consumer electronics, fashion, jewellery and furniture.

On arrival, attendees were tasked with ‘A Design Challenge’ and were asked to vote on what they thought would have been the correct outcome in a number of recent product design cases heard by the UK courts. These case studies were then used by our presenters as the foundation to explain to the audience the matrix of IP rights which are available to protect aspects of product design and how they can be used to tackle copycats, including online.

We were also delighted to have Lisa Tomlins, General Counsel at our client, MADE.COM, speaking about the unique challenges which she has faced at a fast growing company which puts original product design at the heart of what they do.  Lisa’s industry perspective proved to be extremely insightful for all our attendees.
